Why work in the UK?

With a large thriving expat community, particularly in London, but also in other major cities across the UK, many Australian’s choose to locate themselves there for the purposes of work and culture. With Europe on its doorstep, the UK boasts easy access to the glamourous Mediterranean, snow topped mountains of the Alps and cultural hotspots across northern Europe.

75% of Aussies who head to the UK find it easy to secure well paid work within four weeks of arriving. The shortage of medical and Allied Health professionals across the UK, means that a wide range locum roles are available.

If you are planning to secure a medical role during your stay, you will need to apply via the UK’s Health and Care Professions Council, for more information visit: https://www.hcpc-uk.org/registration/getting-on-the-register/international-applications/

Australian allied health professionals are very much sought after in the UK. An ageing population, combined with a skills shortage within Allied Health professions has led to a significant increase in the number of physiotherapists, radiographers, dietitians, occupational therapists and podiatrists required in the UK.

Choosing the right visa

Whether you are planning to visit under the Working Holiday Visa or if you are seeking to move their more permanently, there are many visa options available. Like the Australian system, the UK’s visa application process is based on a points system. However, if you hold the Right to Abode, you may already eligible to work there. There are three conditions that you need to meet order to have right of abode:

  • One of your parents was born in the UK (and was still a UK citizen at time of your birth)
  • You were born before 1st January 1983 into a Commonwealth country
  • You have never ceased to be a Commonwealth citizen since 31st December 1982
