What do you love about Aussie Locums?

I love that we recruit for the whole of Australia and New Zealand from our little hometown of Cairns.

We pride ourselves on our industry knowledge and understanding the needs of our candidates and clients. It is a real privilege to be part of people’s Australian locum journey. We don’t just fill jobs, we create lifetime career memories through consistent and quality recruitment opportunities.

What is your greatest source of enjoyment in recruitment?

Calling candidates to give them the amazing news that they have been successful in obtaining a position that they were super pumped about. Makes me smile for miles!

Where do you feel you add value to candidates who are looking for work?

I like to think being available when our candidates really need to talk, such as before or after work, on lunch breaks or at weekends is a real plus as it makes their lives easier.

I love sharing industry knowledge with candidates who have never been in a locum role as I like to ensure people are equipped with a great overview of what to expect as a locum.

I advocate and negotiate on behalf of the locum in a way that’s fair and reasonable to both the candidate and the client. It has to work for both parties of course.

What advice would you give to candidates from overseas who are looking to work in Australia?

Be prepared for the journey. It will take time for applications to be processed through the Australian governing bodies, so give yourself enough time to go through the process before booking a plane ticket.

It is also important to understand that the Australian market can be different to other countries, so I help educate them by sharing information about how to get the most out of their time in Australia.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

Communication is key in the recruitment industry, so follow up and follow through. Don’t over promise and under deliver. It’s just not cool!

If you asked a client to describe you, what would they say?

I hope they would say I am approachable and friendly, and that I listen in a way that allows me to truly understand their recruitment needs and how we can help find a solution. Based on feedback we receive, I reckon they would also say that the candidates I find them, are not just clinically awesome, but are also the right fit for their team.

What is the most unusual assignment you have ever been asked to fill?

It was for a radiographer we recruited to work on a dry island (no alcohol) in North Queensland in the middle of cyclone season. They were on call seven days per week with no set hours, which is known as ‘island time’, so when an x-ray was needed, they were called in.

The candidate used her time wisely, got super fit at the local gym, read books and got involved in the indigenous community programs where she learnt new crafts and other skills whilst on assignment. Memory creating at its best!

Can you tell us about the most memorable moment of your career?

I love to meet candidates personally – either on a client visit out of town, or when they pass through Cairns on holiday or for work. Just to be able to meet them in person, as well as their families if they are traveling Australia, makes my heart sing.

Is there a client, candidate or project that stands out?

What I love about this role is the variety that each day brings – you don’t just wake up in the morning and know what the plan for the day is. You have to be flexible, open and ready to change your day at the drop of a hat. That’s what’s exciting – you never know what awesome new candidate will call you or if that really cool dream boat of a job will land on your desk. We have industry bodies call us and ask for our opinion on things that are happening to find out how we can help them with projects. I believe this is because they know how driven and passionate we are about helping people. We are always striving to make a positive impact on our industry in a way that’s kind, respectful and engaging with likeminded candidates and clients.
