FAQs

Some questions you may like answered

We are professional recruitment consultants, with an extensive network of both candidates and clinics, hospitals and other care facilities. We make it our mission to get to know who we work with, so we can find the best fit for our candidates as well as for our clients. Some of our candidates become clients and vice versa, with many having been with us since we opened in 2008.

By gathering industry insights and identifying trends, we can capture opportunities before they even come to the market. Many of our candidates actively choose to work with us exclusively, which further builds on the detailed understanding of their needs which we have gained. By having a talented pool of Radiographers who we have got to know, our clients can be confident that we aren’t simply passing on a resume, we are referring a person who we know beyond words on a page or a quick phone call.

There are a few steps that you will need to take in order to work in Australia. These processes can take time, so our advice is to put in your applications as soon as possible.

First of all, you will need to contact the Medical Radiation Practice Board – AHPRA. They are the national registration body for medical imaging and to work as a medical radiation practitioner in Australia you must be registered to practice and have a legal right to work in Australia.

You must apply as an international applicant if you have:

  • obtained your qualification in a division of medical radiation practice in a country other than Australia (excluding New Zealand)
  • not completed an approved or equivalent qualification leading to registration in Australia, and
  • not held registration in Australia before.

How to apply for registration:

You can lodge your application for registration, and supporting documentation, by post or in person at an Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) office in the state or territory in which you plan to live and work.

All international applications are subject to the same national assessment standards regardless of where the application is lodged.

AHPRA do not accept applications by email because they need your original signature (not a scanned signature, for example) on the application documents.

Applying for registration does not guarantee that you meet the standards for registration. Granting registration is a decision of the Medical Radiation
Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA).

There is a specific application form for medical radiation practitioners with qualifications obtained overseas. (AGOS-91)

Radiation Licences

Then, depending on which state in Australia you wish to work in you will be required to obtain a Radiation Use Licence. https://www.asmirt.org/careers-and-employment/differences-between-states-in-employment-conditions

Do you have New Zealand registration?

Should you obtain registration in New Zealand first, you may apply for registration via the Trans Tasman mutual recognition Form ATMR-91

Correct working rights for Australia:

You will also need to consider what visa you will be able to work under. Most overseas candidates will come over initially on a working holiday visa – however if you are over 31 years of age, we recommend you contact the Department of Immigration regarding your suitable visa. You can look into this further at the Australian Immigration website https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/.

Physiotherapists wishing to head over to the UK for a working holiday can connect with a dedicated UK based consultant who can assist you with securing work.

Australian trained physiotherapists are highly sought after so if you are thinking of heading to the UK, it is likely you will have a wealth of opportunities to pick from. Speak to your Aussie Locum consultant to find out more about how we can help.

The locum work in the UK is largely within the NHS Hospital system and can be a great way to gain experience if you are looking to break into hospital-based work upon your return to Australia.
